I

If you’ve chosen San Diego as a vacation spot, and happen to have a free sunset (or sunrise), I fully recommend having some “just because” portraits taken. (Just ask my boyfriend – every time we travel, I try to book us a session!) Susan & Kristian and I wandered around the downtown waterfront for just about an hour around sunset, while in town for a few days. The city set against the ocean dotted with boats made for the perfect backdrop for them. If you’re not super familiar with the area, don’t worry, your photographer should have a few ideas for a place that might appeal to you. I’ve also listed just a couple of my favorite San Diego portrait spots below:

  1. Your AirBnB: If you’ve chosen a place with lots of light and character, think about having your photographer meet you there, for some intimate indoor photos without leaving home. Light some candles, pour some beers, and get cozy!
  2. Coronado Sand Dunes: The light here reflects off the sand in an incredibly flattering way to skin tones, the beach is expansive, and afterwards you can plan on a swanky dinner at the hotel.
  3. Balboa Park: This isn’t revolutionary, but the park, with its historic architecture, manicured landscaping, and ancient trees, provides a variety of backgrounds to suit your mood.
  4. The beach: San Diego is literally famous for its beaches. Come with a blanket and sweater for a cozy beach session, boho dresses and hats for that casual chic aesthetic, or go cheeky with swimsuits and surfboards. Whatever is your style, we have the perfect beach for you, and we might even recommend a secret spot where you can get away from the crowds for a bit.
